What is Filmic Pro?

Filmic Pro showed the world that iPhones could shoot cinematic video and was famous through projects like the feature film Tangerine. For years it was the only game in town, offering the manual controls filmmakers wanted.

Filmic Pro’s main draw is its deep level of control over the iPhone’s camera. It does this through a combination of interface elements and settings. The screen has draggable reticles for focus (square) and exposure (circle) and sliders for fine manual adjustments. Quick Action Modals (QAMs) for quick access to settings and a customizable Function (Fn) button for your most used feature.

Then came changes. Filmic Inc. was acquired by Bending Spoons. Soon after the app went from a one time purchase to a subscription model. This caused a stir in the user community. Some users complained about the pace of updates and feature innovation compared to its earlier days and competitors. This is how many view Filmic Pro today so a clear look at what it is today is necessary.

Core Features of Filmic Pro IPA Latest Version

Exposure Controls

Manual exposure is the key to avoiding unwanted brightness shifts and having creative control. Filmic Pro gives you control over ISO (sensor sensitivity) and Shutter Speed (exposure time per frame – aim for the 180-degree rule, 1/48th at 24fps for natural motion). You can also adjust the overall Exposure Value (EV). To help you get accurate exposure the app has essential monitoring tools: Zebras show overexposed areas, False Color maps exposure across the frame, Histograms show tonal distribution and Waveforms show luminance.

Focus Controls

Manual focus ensures your subject is in focus and allows for focus pulls. Filmic Pro has a precise manual focus slider. You can also set pull points for smooth focus transitions between two distances. Focus Peaking helps by highlighting in focus areas with a colored overlay, makes it easier.

White Balance & Color

Natural colors under different lighting conditions is key. Filmic Pro has White Balance presets (Daylight or Tungsten), custom Kelvin temperature control and Tint. For maximum post production flexibility it has LOG Gamma (LogV3+) which captures a wider dynamic range but requires color grading. The app also supports LUTs (Look-Up Tables); you can import custom .cube files to preview or apply specific creative looks or technical conversions (like LOG-to-Rec.709) in-camera.

Resolution, Frame Rates & Aspect Ratios

These determine image detail, motion and framing. Filmic Pro has options for resolution from SD to 4K (or higher on the latest iPhones), standard frame rates (24, 25, 30fps) for a cinematic or standard look and high speed frame rates (60, 120, 240fps) for slow motion. You can also choose from various aspect ratios, standard 16:9 to cinematic widescreen (2.39:1) or square (1:1) for social media.

Encoding, Bitrate & Quality

These affect video file size, video quality and editability. You can choose between H.264 (for compatibility) and HEVC/H.265 (for compression) Codecs. Bitrate is the data rate; Filmic has options like Standard, Filmic Quality and Filmic Extreme, with higher bitrates = better quality but bigger files. The app supports 10-bit Color, which is important for grading LOG footage. A key feature for users with high-end iPhones is ProRes support. ProRes codecs (Proxy, LT, 422, 422 HQ, 4444, 4444 XQ) are industry standards for high quality and editing performance but generate very large files. Check Filmic’s specs to confirm ProRes compatibility for your iPhone model.

Audio Control

Professional video requires good audio. Filmic Pro lets you choose the input source (internal mics, external mics via Lightning/USB-C), manual gain control, on-screen audio meters, headphone monitoring to check levels live and records in PCM or AAC.

Lens & Stabilization

Filmic Pro lets you switch between the iPhone’s built-in lenses (Ultra Wide, Wide, Telephoto). For users with add-on lenses it has an Anamorphic Desqueeze feature to display footage shot with anamorphic optics correctly. It also has digital image stabilization options (Standard and Cinematic) but be aware the higher Cinematic setting can introduce latency in the live preview.

Who Should (Still) Use Filmic Pro in 2025?

Despite the competition, Filmic Pro might still be the best for:

  • Users heavily invested in the Frame.io cloud workflow.
  • Those who love Filmic Pro’s interface and workflow after trying others.
  • Those who need specific hardware support (perhaps certain gimbals or older lens adapters) that are better implemented in Filmic Pro (always check).
  • Long time legacy users who are comfortable with the app and haven’t had major issues on their current setup.

Who Should Look Elsewhere in 2025?

Consider alternatives if you are:

  • On a budget: Blackmagic Camera gives you the core pro features on iOS for free.
  • Prioritizing Stability & Updates: Blackmagic Camera is currently the stronger contender here.
  • A beginner: The native iOS camera app or simpler options like Kino are a less intimidating entry point.
  • An Android user: Due to feature variability, test with the Evaluator app or strongly consider alternatives as the iOS experience may not fully translate.
